My answer to What is your impression of a 17-year old girl who doesn’t have a Facebook, Instagram, or Snapchat?
Answer by Trevor Carss:
My impression does not change, as I respect her decision, however I would need to know how she interacts with others to see why this would be the appropriate lifestyle approach.
Does she still communicate with people offline or is she socially removed?
Can she use text messaging (that is a form of social media)? For kids today the challenge is even greater to interact without social media. If her friends communicate online or organize events online then she may feel left out.
When getting a job after university / college, will her lack of online presence hurt her chances of securing a job? Most recruiters are checking out LinkedIn profiles today. Depends on her interview and interpersonal skills, as well as her ability to network offline.
If she’s running a business down the road, how will she find prospects? It will require an offline marketing strategy, which may not scale well for growth.
A world without social media is possible, as long as she is comfortable communicating through offline channels.
